Momentary Failure

about

Inspired by the band, Failure, in particular, the song "Stuck on You".

I more or less stumbled on the right combination of sound and effect to simulate the sound of the opening to Failure's "Stuck on You" and originally intended to attempt a cover of the song. However, as I continued working on the track, I found enough ways to make it a more original track, while still maintaining that signature sound that Failure was known for.

The title, "Momentary Failure" was just that - in this moment, I found a way to resemble and pay homage to one of my favorite bands and strongest influences on me as a songwriter for just a moment.

As for why there are no lyrics... everything I wrote for this felt like a letdown, something that wouldn't work as a Failure song. Add to that the frustration I was already having with MOVIE MAGIC on the whole, coupled with everything going on during one of the most stressful and painful years of my life, and I essentially just gave up.

In hindsight, I think what kept me from being able to find lyrics or a vocal performance that would work with this track was, for one, the dedication to using the name "Momentary Failure" as the name of the track, limiting myself lyrically to that concept. Another element is the bass line itself, which seems to move and progress the story of the song well enough without words. On one hand, a more "complete" version of this track could, theoretically, be one of the greater accomplishments of my songwriting career. On the other, it could just as easily ruin the presence of a near-perfect progression of bass which just makes the song what it is.

I would have loved the chance to be able to fully emulate Failure for just a moment, to pay tribute to how much they've influence me as an artist, because that influence doesn't necessarily show in my discography. The Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Marilyn Manson influences show. The Kanye West and Ferry Corsten influences show. Even the Coheed and Cambria influences show themselves on some level. But Failure? I honestly think that if I told people I was heavily influenced by this band, and in particular, the album FANTASTIC PLANET, they'd have a hard time seeing how that's possible.
